There is such a fear for change however, this is often compounded by the instinctive fear of the risk that is involved in undertaking the change in the first place. The irony!!
What is risk? Is getting out of bed in the morning a risk? Is driving to work or going grocery shopping a risk? In terms of life and death each movement or even lack of movement can put someone in line with mortality. This is a known fact and life cannot be lived fearing death at every corner as it would defeat the purpose of living.
So if this isn’t the risk that is spoken about, what other risk and fear of risk exists to the point that it creates inaction and unending procrastination, denial and avoidance at all costs?
The risk that is so blatantly feared is not death; it is to live. It is not only live, but live congruent and true to that individual. The fear exists within this due to how the culture has created a sense of conformity and alignment from a young age of social expectations. To step outside of this would mean to go against “the norm” and may potentially not be accepted by the majority.
This then opens a can of worms into fitting in, being accepted, being loved and good enough within the view of cultural acceptance. Phew!
Taking a step back and looking at this from the perspectives of basic fundamentals, risk is driven into the mentality as being bad or unhealthy. Rarely the association is positive let alone liberating. This conversion of association must come from the individual and this alone is a risk.
When this risk is more defined in terms of business, fitness, health, career choices and so forth a multitude of reasons, better termed excuses, are created to remain within the confines and comfort of conformity. The irony is that conformity, society and culture are governed by the collective individual and if the collective individual changes then others will too thus creating a change within the bounds and limitations of conformity. Yet, the fear to risk this change, irrelevant of how big or small it may be renders most individuals stuck and in a rut of perpetual procrastination. Worst of all, the indivudals are miserable because conforming and not aligning to the individual is unnatural and will result in unnatural behaviour.
The risk that exists is not in dying or living, it is risking whether being yourself is better than being a number within numbers that in reality doesn’t exist.
